From July 2024 all new vehicles sold in UK are required to have Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) speed limiters fitted
Speed limiters work in a variety of different ways, both in how the prevailing speed limit is detected and how drivers are notified.
Intelligent Speed Assist systems fitted on most new cars use a combination of a GPS-based database and onboard camera to determine active speed limits.
The system fitted as standard to the Hyundai i10 uses only only camera-based technology to interpret roadside signage. This significantly impacts the system’s reliability and accuracy.
This issue is exacerbated in the 2024 Hyundai i10 because the Intelligent Speed Limit Warning (ISLW) cannot be disabled.
2024 Hyundai i10 owners manual provides a full-page list of situations where the i10’s speed warning system may behave incorrectly.
These relate to problems with missing signage and difficulties interpreting signs due to weather, lighting conditions or obstructions.
There are also difficulties with national speed limit signs and erroneous interpretation of other visual cues (eg. signs on lorries) which the camera-based system cannot handle.
It is not possible to permanently disable Intelligent Speed Limit Warning on the 2024 Hyundai i10 or cancel erroneous alarms as they occur.
Temporarily deactivation is possible by scrolling through several layers of setup menu and is not recommended while driving.
The system reactivates each time the vehicle is started.
Depending on i10 driver's circumstances and usage patterns, limitations of the i10 Intelligent Speed Limit Warning system may outweigh the possible value. Some drivers may also feel that frequent audible alarms, possibly erroneous, provide an unwelcome or dangerous distraction to safe driving.
